Best Y Level for Diamonds in Minecraft 26.3

Oct 30, 20263 min readBy the CHEAT SMP team
Quick answer

Mine at Y=-59. Diamond ore gets more common the deeper you go and is most common at Y=-58 and Y=-59, so a 2-block-tall tunnel with your feet at -59 covers both peak layers. This works the same in Java 26.3 and Bedrock.

TL;DR
  • Best level: Y=-59 (peak at -58 and -59).
  • Diamonds generate from Y=16 down to Y=-63.
  • Exposed-to-air ore often fails to generate, so caves undersell depth.
  • Use Fortune III: about 2.2 diamonds per ore on average.
  • Java and Bedrock use the same diamond distribution.

01What is the best Y level for diamonds?

The short answer: Y=-59. Stand with your feet on that layer and dig a 2-block-tall tunnel.

The Minecraft Wiki lists Y=-58 and Y=-59 as the most common layers for deepslate diamond ore. Your tunnel covers both at once.

  • Press F3 on Java to see your Y coordinate.
  • On Bedrock, turn on Show Coordinates in world settings.
  • The bedrock floor starts at Y=-64 and gets bumpy up to about Y=-60, so -59 is about as low as you can comfortably walk.

If lava keeps flooding your tunnel, move up a few layers. You lose a little ore density, but you save a lot of time.

02Why do diamonds spawn so deep?

Since the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update, diamond ore uses a triangle spread. It starts at Y=16 and gets more common the lower you go. Nothing changed for diamonds in 26.3 "Wilderness Bound".

The game places diamond ore in four batches:

BatchVein sizeY rangeNext to air
7 per chunk1-5 ores16 to -6350% chance to skip
1 per 9 chunks1-23 ores16 to -6370% chance to skip
4 per chunk1-10 ores16 to -63Never generates
2 per chunk1-10 ores-4 to -6350% chance to skip

That last column matters. Diamond ore often refuses to spawn touching air. It does not get that penalty next to water or lava, so check the walls of flooded caves and aquifers.

03Strip mining or caving: which finds more diamonds?

Both work. They suit different moods.

  • Strip mining (branch mining) at Y=-59 is steady and safe. Dig a main hallway, then side tunnels with 2 solid blocks between them so you see every block once.
  • Caving is faster for spotting ore, because you see huge wall areas at once. But many diamonds are skipped where they would touch air, so open caves hold fewer than the depth suggests.
  • Combine them: branch mine at -59 and break into any cave you hit. Scan its walls, then keep tunneling.

Bring a water bucket, food, and blocks. Deepslate also mines slower than stone, so an Efficiency pickaxe helps.

04Should you use Fortune or Silk Touch on diamond ore?

You need at least an iron pickaxe. A plain pickaxe drops 1 diamond and some XP.

PickaxePossible dropsAverage per ore
No Fortune11
Fortune I1-21.33
Fortune II1-31.75
Fortune III1-42.2

No Fortune yet? Mine the ore with Silk Touch, store the blocks, and break them later with Fortune III. Fortune and Silk Touch can't go on the same pickaxe.

05How do you plan a diamond mining trip?

A good trip is mostly prep. Here is a simple plan that works on Java 26.3 and Bedrock:

  1. Gear up. Bring an iron or diamond pickaxe (two if you can), a water bucket, a stack of cheap blocks, torches, food and a bed if you want a respawn point nearby.
  2. Dig down safely. Use a staircase instead of digging straight down, so you never drop into lava or a cave.
  3. Stop at Y=-59. Check your coordinates every few blocks near the bottom.
  4. Branch out. Dig one long main tunnel, then side tunnels left and right with 2-block gaps.
  5. Light it up. Torches keep mobs from spawning behind you and mark where you have been.
  6. Save the best ore for Fortune. If your Fortune pickaxe isn't ready, Silk Touch the ore and come back.

Watch for lava. Deep caves often have big lava lakes. If you hear it or see orange light, block it off before you keep digging.

Also listen for sculk. Deep dark biomes sit at these depths too, and a warden there is not worth a few diamonds.

06Is there a faster way to find diamonds?

In vanilla, the honest fast way is good habits: right depth, cave walls next to water, and Fortune III.

Real x-ray mods and resource packs count as cheating on almost every multiplayer server. Don't risk a ban.

On CHEAT SMP, ore-finding is built into the server. You start with Ore Ping, which pings ores within 12 blocks (30s cooldown, 20 Heat). The free Miner pack adds X-Ray Vision, Vein Miner and Auto-Smelt. See how it works on our legit x-ray server page and the full cheats list.

07Try it on a live server

CHEAT SMP runs Java 26.3, so everything above works there. You also get server-side powers like Ore Ping, and a Sell Chest that pays for diamonds. Join at play.cheatsmp.dev or read the beginner guide first.

FAQFrequently asked questions

What Y level are diamonds most common in 26.3?

Y=-58 and Y=-59. Stand at Y=-59 with a 2-block-tall tunnel to cover both.

Is the best Y level for diamonds different on Bedrock?

No. Bedrock and Java use the same diamond ore distribution, so Y=-59 is best on both.

Can you find diamonds above Y=0?

Yes, diamond ore can generate up to Y=16, but it is much rarer up there than near Y=-59.

How many diamonds does Fortune III give?

Fortune III drops 1 to 4 diamonds per ore, about 2.2 on average.
