01Can you sit in Minecraft without mods?
Yes. Since the Wilderness Bound game drop (Java Edition 26.3, released September 15, 2026), you can sit on a cushion. No mods, no plugins, no commands.
Before that, the only way to sit in vanilla was to ride something: a boat, a minecart or a mob. Those tricks still work, and we cover them below.

02How do you craft a cushion?
Cushions are made from wool slabs, which were also added in 26.3.
- Put 3 wool blocks of the same color in a row in a crafting table. You get 6 wool slabs.
- Put 3 matching wool slabs in a row. You get 1 cushion.

So 3 wool makes 2 cushions. Cushions stack to 16.
You can also find white cushions in barrels at the new abandoned camps, and colored cushions are often placed near the campfire.
03How does sitting on a cushion work?
Place the cushion on top of a block, then right-click it (press Use). Your character sits down. Press sneak (Left Shift by default on Java) to get up.
- It sits on any flat surface and snaps to the block grid.
- It has no collision, so you can walk through it.
- Two cushions cannot share one spot.
- It breaks if you remove the block under it.
- One punch or arrow breaks it, and it always drops itself.
- Pistons cannot move it. They break it instead.
One fun detail: while you sit on a cushion, knockback, pistons and portals do not move you. You become movable again once you stand up.
A few more things worth knowing:
- Surfaces: cushions sit neatly on things shorter than a block, like snow layers, wildflowers, slabs, stairs and even enchanting tables.
- Lava: a cushion in lava burns up after a few seconds.
- Sculk: unlike wool, cushions do not block vibrations. Sitting down and getting up can set off a sculk sensor, so skip them near a warden.
- Fuel: they burn in a furnace. Four cushions smelt one item, so this is a last resort.
04How do you make a chair in Minecraft?
Cushions rest on top of whatever is under them, even blocks shorter than a full block. That makes chairs easy.
- Stair chair: place a stair, then a cushion on the low step. The high step becomes the chair back.
- Bench: a row of slabs with a cushion on each one.
- Floor seating: cushions straight on the floor around a low table or campfire.
- Couch: wool stairs (new in 26.3) with matching cushions.
Tip: the upper step of a stair hides part of the cushion, so test the look before you build 20 of them.
Easy room ideas:
- Living room: a U of gray wool stairs, gray cushions, and a carpet in the middle.
- Campfire circle: a campfire with 4 to 6 cushions around it, like the new camps.
- Throne: a stair on a raised block, a red cushion, and banners behind it.
- Dining table: stairs facing a row of slabs, with a cushion on every stair.
05What are the old ways to sit in Minecraft?
Before cushions, players used vehicles and mobs. They all still work in 26.3.

Sitting on plain stairs is not a vanilla feature. Many servers add it with plugins like GSit, which also adds laying and crawling. Credit to that plugin's developer for years of chairs.
The boat trick was the most popular for years. Builders hid boats under carpets or in corners to fake a seat. Now a cushion does the same job without the bulky boat model.
Pets can sit too. Right-click a tamed wolf, cat or parrot to make it sit and stay.
