The dappled forest is an autumn biome from the Wilderness Bound drop (26.3). It generates near cold biomes and is full of poplar trees with red, orange or yellow leaves, bouncy shelf mushrooms, red shrubs and leaf litter.

01What is the dappled forest?
The dappled forest is a new autumn-colored forest added in the Wilderness Bound drop (Java 26.3, September 15, 2026). It was first shown at Minecraft Live in May 2026.
From the sky it is a sea of red, orange and yellow. On the ground you get:
- Orange-tinted grass and coarse dirt
- Leaf litter, red shrubs and brown mushrooms
- Lots of fallen poplar logs with shelf mushrooms
- A few spruce trees mixed in
- Very dark, almost black water
Animals here are sheep, foxes, rabbits and the cold variants of cows, pigs and chickens.
Fallen poplars show up here more often than fallen trees in any other biome. Each one is a stump plus a log 4 to 7 blocks long lying nearby, often with mushrooms on top. They are an easy source of logs without climbing.
On Bedrock the trees grow much thicker than on Java. It can get dark enough under the canopy for hostile mobs to spawn in daytime, so bring torches.
02Where does the dappled forest generate?
It generates in fairly cold, very dry areas, near cold biomes. Look for it next to:
- Plains and sunflower plains
- Cherry groves
- Ice spikes
- Swamps
It can be tiny, just a few trees, or stretch for hundreds of blocks. Rivers or valleys often split it from plains.
Important: new biomes only appear in newly generated chunks. If your world is older than 26.3, travel to areas you have never loaded.
03How do you find a dappled forest fast?
- Use a map from a camp. Common chests in abandoned camps always hold one camp map. One of the 8 types is the Dappled Forest Camp Map, which leads to a camp inside the biome.
- Head toward cold biomes. Snowy areas and ice spikes are good signs you are close.
- Look for color. The red, orange and yellow canopy is easy to spot from high ground.
- Single player with cheats on: type
/locate biome minecraft:dappled_forest.
Visiting it also counts toward the Adventuring Time advancement.
04What is in the poplar wood set?
Poplar is the new wood type. Poplar logs are light brown, and they make a full set:

Wandering traders can also sell poplar logs, poplar saplings and shelf mushrooms.
05How do poplar leaf colors work?
- Each tree picks red, orange or yellow at random, with equal odds.
- Falling leaf particles match the tree color.
- Poplar leaves keep their color in every biome and do not turn white in snow.
- Saplings drop from leaves 5% of the time. A grown sapling picks a random color, so you cannot choose.
- Get the leaf blocks themselves with shears or Silk Touch.
- Smelt poplar leaves in a furnace to get leaf litter.
Want one color only? Grow saplings with bone meal and keep the trees you like.
Growing tips for a poplar farm:
- Plant on dirt, grass, coarse dirt, podzol, moss, mud or farmland.
- Saplings need light level 9 or more to grow on their own. Bone meal works in any light.
- Leave plenty of open space above. Poplars have one trunk with a very large canopy, and a sapling with no room just stays a sapling.
- Grown poplars can come with shelf mushrooms already on the trunk.
06What do shelf mushrooms and red shrubs do?
Shelf mushrooms grow on the sides of poplar logs, standing or fallen.
- Two sizes. Bone meal turns a small one into a large one. They never grow on their own.
- A large one drops 2 shelf mushrooms.
- They bounce. Land on one and you bounce back with 75% of your speed, like a bed. You still take fall damage, but a bit less than half.
- Place them on any full block side, in any light level.
- Use them in mushroom stew, suspicious stew and rabbit stew. Since 26.3, mushroom and suspicious stew take 2 of any mushroom.
Red shrubs are small decorative plants that grow in patches. They stay red in every biome. Bone meal spreads them to a nearby block. They cannot go in flower pots.
Plant red shrubs on grass, dirt, moss or mud. Lava destroys them with no drop, and placing a block on one replaces it, so watch where you build.
