Place a block of copper, then put a carved pumpkin on top. A copper golem spawns and the copper turns into a copper chest. The golem moves items from copper chests into nearby chests that are empty or already hold that item.

01What does a copper golem do?
A copper golem is a small, friendly mob that sorts your stuff. It takes items out of copper chests and carries them to regular wooden chests.
It came with The Copper Age drop (Java 1.21.9) and works the same way in Java 26.3. It has 6 hearts, is fully passive, and panics if you hit it.
- Opens doors (not iron doors)
- Takes no fall damage
- Sinks in water but does not drown
- Drops 1 to 3 copper ingots when killed
Unlike most passive mobs, it keeps working even when you are more than 32 blocks away, as long as the area is loaded. That makes it handy for a storage room you are not standing in.
02How do you build a copper golem?
- Place a block of copper. Any oxidation stage works.
- Place a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern on top. The pumpkin must go last.
- The golem pops out, and the copper block becomes a copper chest.
A dispenser can place the pumpkin too. The build also works sideways or upside down.
The golem and chest match the copper block's oxidation. If you use a waxed copper block, the golem and chest still come out unwaxed, so wax them afterward.

Copper is easy to find, especially in dripstone caves. Smelt the raw copper, then put 9 copper ingots in a crafting table to make one block of copper.
03How does copper golem sorting work?
The golem runs a simple loop:
- Walk to the nearest copper chest and grab up to 16 of the first item it finds.
- Walk to the nearest wooden chest or trapped chest.
- If that chest is empty or already holds the same item, put the items in.
- If not, try the next chest. It remembers up to 9 chests it has checked.
Each chest check takes about 3 seconds. It only searches a 65 x 17 x 65 area around itself.

On Java it cannot tell potion types or tipped arrow types apart. It also ignores enchantments and durability.
It does not look inside shulker boxes or bundles either. While it is holding items, you can use an empty hand on it to make it drop them.
04How do you set up a simple sorting room?
- Put one copper chest as your input. Dump mixed loot in here.
- Line up wooden chests nearby, all on the same level as the golem or close to it. It cannot reach chests more than 1 block above or 2 blocks below it.
- Put one item of each type in each chest: cobblestone in one, dirt in another, and so on.
- Leave one chest empty at the far end as overflow. Empty chests accept anything.
- Keep the room closed so the golem does not wander off.
It is slow, so think of it as a helper, not a hopper system. Build it inside your claimed base so nobody walks off with your loot.
Want it faster? Build more golems. Two golems will not open the same chest at the same time, so they spread out. Keep the room small so their search stays short.
05How does copper golem oxidation work?
An unwaxed copper golem slowly turns green, just like copper blocks.

That is real play time, about 21 to 23 in-game days per stage. The timer keeps going even when the chunk is not loaded.
When it becomes a copper golem statue, it drops whatever it was holding and freezes in a random pose.
A golem standing on a slab or in water cannot turn into a statue, but do not rely on that trick. Waxing is the clean fix.
06How do you stop or undo oxidation?
- Wax it: use a honeycomb on the golem. It stops aging and never becomes a statue.
- Scrape it: use an axe to remove one stage. An axe also removes wax.
- Lightning: a strike also removes one stage from an unwaxed golem.
- Wake a statue: scrape the statue with an axe until it is clean, then once more to bring the golem back.
Fun extra: iron golems sometimes hand a copper golem a poppy, which it wears on its head. Shears remove it.
