01When did Minecraft come out on Switch 2?
Minecraft launched natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026. Pre-orders opened on October 8.
You can buy it digitally on the Nintendo eShop or as a physical Standard Edition in stores. The physical version is a Game-Key Card, so the box holds a key to download the game, not the full game on the cart.
Before this, Switch 2 owners played the original Switch version through backward compatibility. That still works, but the new version is the one with the upgrades.
02What is improved on Switch 2?
The big change is graphics. Here is what Mojang and launch coverage confirm:
- Vibrant Visuals by default. You get directional lighting, volumetric fog and dynamic shadows.
- Longer render distance. You can see farther across the world.
- Your worlds carry over. Bring your Switch worlds and pick up where you left off.
- Super Mario Mash-Up Pack included. Every Switch 2 edition gets it, updated for Vibrant Visuals. It has Mushroom Kingdom-style locations, 15 music tracks and 40 skins.
- Marketplace support. Marketplace content that supports Vibrant Visuals works too.
One catch: Vibrant Visuals is not available in split-screen and in some Marketplace worlds.
Mojang has not published resolution or frame rate numbers. Its announcement also does not mention mouse controls or GameChat, so treat those as unconfirmed.
03How much does it cost, and is the upgrade free?
There are three digital editions. Prices below are US launch prices.

Yes, if you own the digital Switch version. Here is how the upgrade path works:
- Free Standard upgrade for digital Switch owners in most regions.
- Window: October 27, 2026 at 9AM PT to January 31, 2027 at 9AM PT.
- Small fee in some regions: 100 JPY in Japan, 30 NTD in Taiwan, 25 THB in Thailand.
- Deluxe and Ultimate upgrades are discounted, through the Nintendo eShop only.
If you own the physical Switch cartridge, the free Standard upgrade does not apply. Mojang says launching the old version on a Switch 2 shows an in-game offer for a discounted Ultimate Collection upgrade, and that offer covers physical owners too.
To claim it:
- Sign in to your Switch 2 with the Nintendo Account that owns the digital game.
- Open the Minecraft page on the Nintendo eShop and pick the upgrade.
- Download the Switch 2 version and load your existing worlds.
04Should you upgrade or keep playing the old version?
The original Switch version still runs on Switch 2. Here is how the two compare on the new console:

If you own the digital version, upgrading before the deadline costs nothing in most regions. Waiting past January 31, 2027 means paying full price for the Standard Edition.
If you mostly play split-screen with family, the visual upgrade matters less, because Vibrant Visuals turns off in split-screen. You still get the longer render distance and the Mario pack.
05Does Minecraft Switch 2 have crossplay?
Yes, with other Bedrock players. The Switch versions run Bedrock Edition, which shares one multiplayer pool across Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, Android, iOS and Switch.
- You need a free Microsoft account to play with friends on other platforms.
- Online play on Switch needs Nintendo Switch Online.
- No Java crossplay. Java and Bedrock are separate games. A Switch player cannot join a Java server unless that server runs a bridge like Geyser.
