The Minecraft movie sequel is titled A Minecraft Movie Squared and releases in US theaters on July 23, 2027 from Warner Bros. Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks return, with Kirsten Dunst as Alex and Matt Berry in a secret role.
- Official title: A Minecraft Movie Squared.
- US release date: July 23, 2027.
- Jared Hess returns to direct.
- Kirsten Dunst plays Alex; Matt Berry's role is secret.
- Herobrine villain talk is only a rumor.
01When does Minecraft Movie 2 come out?
A Minecraft Movie Squared hits US theaters on July 23, 2027. Warner Bros. Pictures is releasing it, with Legendary Pictures and Mojang Studios among the production companies.
The title was revealed during a Minecraft Live presentation in late May 2026, with a behind-the-scenes teaser. Before that, fans called it "A Minecraft Movie 2" or "A Minecraft Sequel."
The first film, A Minecraft Movie, came out in April 2025 and earned nearly $1 billion worldwide, so a sequel was always likely.
02Who is in the cast and crew?
| Actor | Role | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Jack Black | Steve | Returning |
| Jason Momoa | Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison | Returning |
| Danielle Brooks | Dawn | Returning |
| Kirsten Dunst | Alex | New, announced March 2026 |
| Matt Berry | Secret role | Confirmed; he voiced Nitwit in the first film |
| Jennifer Coolidge | Marlene | Listed as returning on Wikipedia |
Kirsten Dunst's Alex is the new owner of Steve's old home. Alex was teased in the first film's post-credits scene, where Kate McKinnon voiced her.
Other returning cast members have not been officially confirmed yet. We will add names here only once the studio announces them.
- Director: Jared Hess, who directed the first film.
- Writers: Jared Hess and Chris Galletta.
- Producers include: Mary Parent, Roy Lee, Jason Momoa and Mojang's Torfi Frans Olafsson.
- Filming: in New Zealand, starting around late April 2026.
A first look at filming was shown at Warner Bros. Discovery's upfronts presentation.
Keeping the same director and lead actors suggests the sequel will keep the first film's comedy tone. Momoa is also a producer this time.
03What is the timeline so far?
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| April 2025 | A Minecraft Movie releases in theaters |
| March 2026 | Kirsten Dunst announced as Alex |
| Late April 2026 | Filming begins in New Zealand |
| Late May 2026 | Title revealed at Minecraft Live, plus a fan build contest |
| July 23, 2027 | US theatrical release |
That puts the sequel a little over two years after the first film. A summer date is a change from the first movie's spring release. Late July is a busy blockbuster window, so the studio is clearly treating the sequel as a big family event film.
04What should you know from the first movie?
If you want a refresher before the sequel, these are the characters coming back:
- Steve (Jack Black) is a former doorknob salesman who spent years in the Overworld.
- Garrett (Jason Momoa) owns a video game store and is a former gaming champion.
- Dawn (Danielle Brooks) runs a mobile petting zoo and now has Steve's old pet wolf, Dennis.
The post-credits scene set up Alex moving into Steve's old house. That is exactly where Kirsten Dunst's version of the character picks up.
The sequel's story has not been officially revealed, so treat any plot summary you see online as a guess.
05What is confirmed and what is rumor?
Confirmed:
- The title, A Minecraft Movie Squared.
- The July 23, 2027 US release date.
- Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Kirsten Dunst and Matt Berry.
- Jared Hess directing.
Not confirmed:
- Matt Berry as Herobrine. Berry has said he is "not allowed to tell you who I'm playing." Herobrine is pure fan speculation for now.
- Plot details. No official story summary has been released.
- Release dates outside the US. Check your local listings closer to launch.
- Trailer date. Only a title teaser has been shown.
Why the Herobrine talk? Herobrine is a fan-made Minecraft legend: a Steve-like figure with white eyes that never existed in the game. Berry was rumored to play a villain, and one writer guessed Herobrine. Nobody official has confirmed it.
Also be careful with "leaked" casting lists for other returning actors. Until Warner Bros. or Mojang confirms them, they are not facts.
06Can your build be in the movie?
Possibly. Mojang announced a fan build contest alongside the title reveal.
- Mojang picks the finalists.
- The Minecraft community votes for the winner.
- The winning build appears in the movie or its end credits.
Finalists also get private screenings. Check Mojang's official channels for entry rules and deadlines.
The contest was announced by Jens Bergensten, Mojang's chief creative officer. If you want to enter, a few general tips:
- Build in a style that fits the film's blocky, colorful look.
- Keep a clean screenshot or video of your build from several angles.
- Read the official rules before you start, so your entry counts.
