Halloween builds need three things: orange light, dark wood and something creepy. Minecraft 26.3 has plenty of all three.
- Light: jack o'lanterns (light level 15), soul lanterns, copper lanterns, candles
- Wood: pale oak, dark oak, spruce and the new poplar
- Creepy: cobwebs, skulls, pale hanging moss, eyeblossoms, the creaking heart
- New in 26.3: red, orange and yellow poplar leaves, cushions, straw beds, wool stairs and concrete stairs
Fun fact: on October 31 in Java Edition, zombies, skeletons and other undead mobs have a 22.5% chance to spawn wearing a carved pumpkin and a 2.5% chance to wear a jack o'lantern.
02What are some easy Halloween builds?
- Pumpkin patch. Rows of pumpkins on coarse dirt, a poplar fence border and a few straw beds for a farm look. Carve some pumpkins with shears.
- Jack o'lantern path. Line a path with jack o'lanterns every 4 blocks. Craft one from a carved pumpkin and a torch. They even glow underwater.
- Autumn tree tunnel. Plant poplar saplings along a road. Leaves come up red, orange or yellow at random, so you get a mixed fall look. Scatter leaf litter underneath.
- Hay maze. Hay bale walls two blocks high, with jack o'lanterns at dead ends.
03What are some spooky Halloween builds?
- Haunted pale oak house. Pale oak walls, dark oak trim, cobweb corners and pale hanging moss under the roof.
- Living haunted tree. Put a creaking heart between two pale oak logs in a trunk. At night it wakes up and spawns a hostile creaking. Great for scares, but warn your friends first.
- Graveyard. Coarse dirt mounds, stone brick slabs for headstones, skulls, eyeblossoms that open and glow at night, and soul lanterns on fences.
- Witch's hut. A spruce stilt hut over a swamp pond, with a cauldron, brewing stand, purple candles and firefly bushes outside. Their fireflies show up in the dark.
04What can you build with the new 26.3 blocks?
- Ghost story campfire. Copy an abandoned camp: a white wool stair tent, a campfire, and a ring of black and orange cushions to sit on. See how cushions work.
- Candy corn tower. Stack yellow, orange and white concrete, then use the new concrete stairs for a smooth tapered top.
- Giant jack o'lantern. An orange wool sphere with a black wool face. Wool stairs round off the edges.
- Bouncy mushroom porch. Shelf mushrooms on poplar log posts make a spooky, bouncy front step. You still take some fall damage, so keep it low.

06Any tips for a better Halloween build?
- Use poplar leaves for color. They stay red, orange or yellow in any biome.
- Mix light sources. Orange jack o'lanterns plus blue soul lanterns look moodier than one kind.
- Leave some dark spots for atmosphere, but light the inside so mobs do not ruin it.
- A creaking heart only wakes up when placed between two pale oak logs, stripped logs or wood blocks lined up the same way.
- Breaking a creaking heart kills its creaking instantly. Put it somewhere you can reach.
- Carved pumpkins can be worn on your head. Great for photos, but you see through a pumpkin overlay.
- Build at night first. Lighting mistakes are much easier to spot in the dark.
- Mix textures. Leaf litter, coarse dirt, gravel and moss on one floor look far more natural than one flat block.
- Add sound. Note blocks, a jukebox or a closed door that opens on a pressure plate can make a haunted house jump.
Short on time? Pick one small build, like the pumpkin patch or the campfire, and do it well. A small, detailed scene beats a huge empty one.
