Java runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and is best for mods, redstone and third-party servers. Bedrock runs on consoles, phones and PC with crossplay. On PC you do not have to choose: the $29.99 bundle includes both.
- PC bundle includes both editions for $29.99 (US)
- Java: mods, technical redstone, huge server scene
- Bedrock: consoles, mobile, crossplay, Marketplace
- Java and Bedrock cannot play together natively
- Both editions got Wilderness Bound on Sept 15, 2026
01What is the difference between Java and Bedrock?
They are two versions of the same game. Same blocks, same mobs, same updates. Both got the Wilderness Bound drop on September 15, 2026 (Java 26.3, Bedrock 26.50).
The big differences are where you can play, who you can play with, and how much you can change the game.
Java is the original PC version. Bedrock is the version built to run on almost everything, from phones to consoles. Game drops now land on both at the same time, but small mechanics and bugs still differ.
02How do Java and Bedrock compare side by side?
| Java | Bedrock | |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Windows, Mac, Linux | Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Switch 2, Android, iOS |
| Crossplay | Java players on any PC OS | Across all Bedrock devices |
| Mods | Full community mods | Add-ons and Marketplace |
| Redstone | Quasi-connectivity, the standard for technical builds | Works differently in places |
| Servers | Join any server by address | Featured servers; custom servers on PC and mobile |
| Performance | Needs a stronger PC | Runs smoothly on weaker devices |
| Controllers / touch | No official support | Yes |
| Split screen | No | Consoles only |
Mojang's own store page sums it up: Java is "best for mods," Bedrock "runs smooth."
Bedrock also has achievements, a Character Creator, and the official Marketplace for skins, worlds and add-ons. Java players use free community skins and content from third-party sites instead.
03How much do Java and Bedrock cost in 2026?
- PC: Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC lists at $29.99 in the US. You get both editions. Prices vary by region. It runs on Windows, and the Java side also runs on Mac and Linux.
- Already own one? Owners of either PC edition get the other free through the launcher.
- Game Pass: the PC bundle is included with Game Pass Premium and PC Game Pass, plus higher Game Pass tiers.
- Switch 2: launched October 27, 2026. Standard is $29.99, Deluxe Collection $39.99, and the largest collection $49.99. Digital Switch owners get a free upgrade to Standard via the eShop.
- Other consoles and phones: Bedrock only; prices vary by store.
There is also a free trial on some platforms if you want to test before you buy.
Note: online play on consoles usually needs that console's subscription. On PC you just need internet.
04Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Not natively. Mojang says the two editions use separate servers, so friends must be on the same edition.
Some Java servers run a third-party tool called Geyser that lets Bedrock players join. It is not official, and features can differ. Bedrock players on those servers may see some blocks or items behave a little differently.
Bedrock consoles have one more limit: Xbox, PlayStation and Switch have no "Add Server" button. You get featured servers and Realms only, unless you use an unofficial workaround.
Want to play with a friend on the other edition? On PC, the bundle means you can switch to whichever edition your friend uses. Our SMP with friends guide has more options.
05Which edition is better for servers, mods and redstone?
- Servers: Java has the widest variety of community servers, from tiny SMPs to huge minigame networks. See our public Java SMP page.
- Mods: Java wins. Performance mods, shaders, and full modpacks live here.
- Redstone: Java is where most technical players build. Quasi-connectivity is Java-only, and many farm designs depend on it.
- Casual play: Bedrock is easier. Plug in a controller, play on the couch, or pick up on your phone.
- Performance: Bedrock usually runs better on weak hardware. Java runs well on a decent PC, and performance mods help a lot.
Shaders are another split. Java has a huge range of community shader packs. Bedrock has its own built-in lighting option called Vibrant Visuals on supported devices.
Java also lets you install older versions from the launcher, which matters for some servers and modpacks.
06Which should you pick in 2026?
- You play on PC: buy the bundle and use both. Many players build in Java and play with console friends in Bedrock.
- Your friends are on console or phone: Bedrock.
- You want mods, shaders, or technical redstone: Java.
- You want big community servers: Java, with a few big Bedrock networks too.
- Your PC is old or low-end: start with Bedrock.
- You have a Switch 2: the new native Bedrock version.
Parents: Bedrock is tied to Xbox services, so its online play and parental controls are easier to manage. Java gives more freedom, which also means more third-party content to check.
