Comparing Hypixel and CHEAT SMP is a bit like comparing an arcade and a campaign. Hypixel is where you queue for a 15-minute round. CHEAT SMP is where you build a base, grind a market and keep a reputation across weeks.
Most players don't need to choose. This page is about which one fits the mood you're in.
The quick test: if you log in wanting a match that ends in 15 minutes, you want a minigame network. If you log in wanting to check on your base, sell yesterday's ores and see who's WANTED tonight, you want a persistent SMP. The two scratch different itches, and plenty of players keep both on their server list.
02What Hypixel does well
Per Wikipedia, Hypixel launched in beta on April 13, 2013. Its minigames were first meant to keep players busy while waiting and became the main draw. Bed Wars, SkyWars and SkyBlock are the headliners.
Scale is its superpower. Guinness recognized it in 2017, including 64,533 concurrent players on July 7, 2017, and Wikipedia reports a record of 216,000 concurrent players on April 16, 2021. It's officially Java-only and available in 25 languages. Players can buy cosmetics and ranks with convenience features.
Hypixel also has an SMP mode: private vanilla worlds you create with VIP+ or higher, per Hypixel Support. The Hypixel Wiki says owners can invite up to 20 players.

04Where CHEAT SMP borrows the minigame feel
CHEAT SMP has a small arcade built in. /arena drops you into a separate void world with loaner kits, so you never lose real gear. Three games: Dash Duels, Ore Rush and Shockwave King. Real matches pay 3 Gems, 40 Cheater Cash and 30 Season Pass XP for a win, up to 10 rewarded matches a day.
Every Saturday at 6 PM Central there's the Cheat Cup: teams of up to 4, three rounds, last round worth 1.5x. First place gets 15 Gems and the CUP CHAMP title. More on arenas.
05What a persistent world adds
Rounds reset. A survival world doesn't. On CHEAT SMP your Patches permanently unlock powers: Ghost Bridge at 25, Short Flight at 40, Shockwave at 100, Fusion slot at 200. Your claims, homes and Blueprint builds stay put.
The world also has a calendar. Reality Crash runs every night at 7 PM Central, from Monday's co-op Reality Rift to Saturday's ANTICHEAT.EXE boss fight. Big moments land in the Hall of Infamy.
06Who should play which
- Hypixel if you want fast queues, a huge game catalog, or a private vanilla world for a friend group.
- CHEAT SMP if you want a public survival world with progression that sticks, risk you opt into, and events with people you'll see again tomorrow.
07Stores, ranks and what money buys
Hypixel sells cosmetics and ranks that add in-game convenience, per Wikipedia, and ranks matter for features like creating a private SMP, which needs VIP+ according to Hypixel Support.
CHEAT SMP follows a similar line with a hard rule on top: powers are never sold, and Patches can't be bought. The CHEATER rank is $3.99 one-time. Subscriptions run from Cheater Plus at $4.99 a month up to Cheater ULTRA at $30 a month, and they add Gems, extra homes and extra claims. Gem bundles start at 30 for $1.99. Everything else is cosmetic: name colors, trails, pets, kill effects, power skins and auras.
