What Is an SMP in Minecraft? A Plain-English Guide

Oct 30, 20263 min readBy the CHEAT SMP team
Quick answer

SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer: a Minecraft server where players share one Survival world, gathering resources, building bases, and surviving together. SMPs range from small private friend groups to large public servers with custom rules like lifesteal, economies, or powers.

TL;DR
  • SMP means Survival Multiplayer
  • Same Survival game, shared with other players
  • Types include vanilla, lifesteal, economy, factions, powers
  • Avoid pay-to-win, cracked servers, and servers with no rules

01What does SMP stand for in Minecraft?

SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer. It is a server where everyone plays Survival mode in the same world.

You mine, build, fight mobs, trade, and work toward goals like beating the Ender Dragon. The difference from single player: other people are there, building next door and changing the world with you.

Many famous YouTube series are private SMPs. Thousands of public SMPs also let anyone join.

The core loop does not change: start with nothing, gather resources, and build up. What changes from server to server is the rules, plugins, and people. One SMP might be pure vanilla with friends. Another might add shops, events, or special powers.

02What are the main types of SMP?

TypeWhat it meansGood for
VanillaPlain Survival, few or no pluginsPlayers who want the classic game
LifestealKill a player to gain a heart; they lose onePvP fans who like high stakes
EconomyMoney, shops, auctions, jobsTraders and builders
FactionsTeams claim land and fight or allyGroups that want rivalry
Powers / abilitiesPlayers get special abilitiesPeople who want something new
AnarchyNo rules at allExperienced players only

Lines blur. Many servers mix an economy with land claims, events, or PvP. CHEAT SMP, for example, mixes powers with lifesteal.

Some SMPs also run seasons. The world resets every few months so everyone starts fresh, which keeps the game fair for new players.

Not sure where to start? A vanilla or economy SMP is the gentlest. Lifesteal and factions are harder because other players can take what you have.

03What is the difference between a public and private SMP?

  • Private SMP: invite only. Usually a whitelist, a Realm, or a friend's server. On Java Realms, up to 10 players can play at once plus the owner.
  • Public SMP: anyone with the address can join. Bigger worlds, more players, staff, and usually plugins for claims and anti-cheat.

Playing with a few friends? A private world works. Want a bigger community without hosting? Try a public one. Our SMP with friends guide covers both.

04How do you pick a good SMP?

Check these before you get attached to a world:

  • Edition and version. Java servers need Java. Your version must match the server.
  • Clear rules. Griefing, stealing, PvP, and chat rules should be written down.
  • Land claims. Can you protect your base?
  • Active staff. Is there a report command and someone answering?
  • Anti-cheat. Hackers ruin survival fast.
  • Fair store. Cosmetics are fine. Selling power is not.
  • Something to do. Events, an economy, or goals keep a world alive.
  • Safe chat. A chat filter and a way to mute or block people matter, especially for younger players.

Then play for an hour before you commit. Read the chat, look around spawn, and see if staff answer questions. Our SMP for beginners guide walks you through your first day.

05What are the red flags to avoid?

  • Pay-to-win. Mojang's usage guidelines say servers should not sell anything that gives a competitive advantage or ruins other players' experience. If ranks sell better gear or powers, money wins, not skill.
  • Cracked (offline-mode) servers. They skip account checks, so anyone can log in with any name, even an admin's. That makes impersonation and griefing easy.
  • No rules or no staff. Unless you chose anarchy on purpose, this usually means griefing and toxic chat.
  • Asking for your password. No real server needs your Microsoft account login.
  • Fake numbers. Huge "online" counts with an empty spawn are a warning sign.

Also be careful with servers that push you to download a special launcher or "required" mod from a random link. A real server tells you exactly what you need on its own website.

06What is a powers SMP?

Powers SMPs give players abilities vanilla Survival does not have, like dashing, flying, or seeing ores. They are fun because the meta changes.

The catch: how do you get the powers? If you buy them, it is pay-to-win. If you earn them, it is a progression system.

CHEAT SMP is built around the second idea. You earn cheat powers like Dash, Ore Ping, and Short Flight by playing. Each use builds Heat, and if you overheat with PvP on, you go WANTED and other players can hunt you. It also has lifesteal: winning an opted-in PvP fight steals 1 heart, but you never drop below 5 hearts and nobody gets banned for losing them. Read why we built it this way.

Other powers servers do it differently. Some give everyone a random power at the start, and some use mods so you need to install a modpack. Pick the style that sounds fun to you.

07Want to try a public SMP?

CHEAT SMP is a free Java 26.3 survival server at play.cheatsmp.dev. Powers are earned, never sold, and the store is cosmetics and convenience only. PvP is opt-in. It is Java only for now. See how to join.
