01Why most powers SMPs need mods, and this one doesn't
Fabric and Forge SMPs put the magic on your side. The server sends you a modpack, you install it, you match its exact version, and if one mod updates you reinstall. That is how most origin-style and ability servers work, and it is why they are a pain to bring friends into.
CHEAT SMP does it the other way around. The powers, the 40 custom items, the Heat bar under your name, the ghost previews in the Blueprint Shop: all of it is computed server-side on a Paper server and streamed to your normal client. Dash moves you 7 blocks because the server moves you. Ore Ping highlights ores because the server tells your client where to draw.
Result: a vanilla Java 26.3 launcher profile is all you need.

03Why no-mods matters more than it sounds
- Friends join in one step. Send the IP. No modpack link, no launcher, no "which version are you on". This is the main reason groups stick around on a friends SMP.
- No version lock. The server runs the current Java release (26.3). When Minecraft updates, you update your launcher like normal. No waiting for forty mods to catch up.
- No crashes from mod conflicts. Your client is vanilla, so the only thing that can break is the server, and that is our job.
- Lower spec. Modpacks eat RAM. A vanilla client runs on hardware that would choke on a 60-mod pack.
- Fair anti-cheat. GrimAC runs on the server and everyone is on the same client. There is no "was that a mod or a hack" gray zone.
04Are client mods allowed at all?
Real hacked clients and cheat mods are bannable. GrimAC watches for them and the server does not need them to deliver its cheats; that is the entire pitch. Every "cheat" on CHEAT SMP is a feature we hand you, tracked by Heat and gated by Patches, so an external cheat client gets you nothing except a ban.
If you are unsure whether a specific client mod is fine, read /rules in-game before you connect with it. When in doubt, join on a clean profile. You are not giving anything up.
05Switching from a Fabric or Forge SMP: what changes
Players coming from origin-style servers usually notice three things. First, powers are earned, not picked at spawn: Dash and Ore Ping are yours from the start, Ghost Bridge comes at 25 Patches, Short Flight at 40, and so on. Second, powers cost Heat, and overheating with PvP on makes you WANTED, so spamming abilities has a real cost. Third, nothing is permanent: three Legendary cheats exist server-wide, one of each, and dying can release them.
